I’m an author and an educator who’s worked in politics, education, publishing and media. My last book,The Accidental Asian: Notes of a Native Speaker, was a New York Times Notable Book featured in the PBS documentary Matters of Race.

I served as a speechwriter for President Clinton and later as White House deputy domestic policy adviser. I’m now a Fellow at the New America Foundation. I live with my wife and daughter in Seattle, where I teach at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Affairs and host an NPR interview show broadcast from KUOW called The Power of Voice.
